Showing Mercy

September 25, 2007

The great philosopher Frank Burns said once, “It’s nice to be nice to the nice.” Well! Any idiot can treat people the way they deserve. You don’t need to be a Christian to pay people back in kind. What takes a gift of the Holy Spirit is to treat people better than they deserve. The word for that kind of treatment is mercy.

The Bible says in Romans 12, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us….If someone’s gift is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Showing mercy means remembering that we ourselves are only starving beggars, made rich by God’s rich gifts to us. It means showing patience with others, as God has shown great patience with us. Be a living sacrifice today—show mercy to someone!

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. ~ Psalm 33:20-22
