The Trouble with Living Free

July 4, 2008

fireworkschurch.jpgFreedom! With the 4th of July just ahead, the lingo and the labels and the logos are just everywhere: flags and fireworks and famous people. Look and listen this week for “declarations of independence”…even for some people willing to die for freedom.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17b) It was difficult for God to make us free, and it is difficult for us sinful people to remain free. Reading about Jesus in the Bible will help us to know the difference between real and bogus liberty. In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (Ephesians 3:12)

Holy Spirit, you see our need. Testify to us of Jesus, who alone makes human beings truly free. Amen

We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you. ~ Psalm 33:20-22
